A while back, our own Edan Lepucki gave all of you a homework assignment. Well, we’ve begun going through the results, and here’s the first one to really jump out. It comes all the way from Cecil Castellucci, and I’ll let her explain the rest:
The novel that I am working on right now is called The Tin Star (out on Roaring Brook, Fall ‘13). I just finished draft one of book one and now I’m just trying to wrap my head around book two. This is my main character, Tula Bane, at her favorite spot at the arboretum window on the space station Yertina Feray. She’s been the only human living there for many years. I was trying to think of how I could distill her desires and obstacles to one sentence or image without spoiling the story. I realized that for ill or nil, heart and home is what informs her sometimes smart, sometimes stupid, decisions. Writing that bone actually clarifies things for me as I embark on writing book two. Now to write my skeleton!
Thanks so much for sharing, Cecil! And to anyone else who wants in on the assignment, it’s not too late to submit your own answers.
