Literary prizes are, of course, deeply arbitrary in many ways; such is the nature of keeping score in a creative field. Nonetheless, our prizewinners post is compiled in the same spirit that one might tally up Cy Young Awards and MVPs to determine if a baseball player should be considered for the Hall of Fame. These awards nudge an author towards the “canon” and help secure them places on literature class reading lists for decades to come.
Years ago, the book crowd freaked when they found out Emeka Okafur was reading Middlesex, but this Landry Fields - Jeremy Lin connection seems even more literary.
“In particular, Fields was pumped for information about a pregame ritual that he and Lin invented — a handshake that simulates someone reading a book, wearing glasses and putting a pocket protector back in place.
“It has everything to do with where we came from in college,” Fields explained. “Harvard-Stanford connection. It’s kind of like a nerd-alert time.”
NERD ALERT TIME.
